Orchestra

Collaborative Computing

  • Orchestra is a suite of portable devices that takes advantage of existing technology (sensory networks, cloud computing, and touchscreen interfaces) to create an adaptable and harmonious work experience. The tablets can be utilized individually or can be combined to create infinite networks, resulting in a more enjoyable and unique user experience.

Design Team: Jenny Redd, Kenny Hopper, Nicholas Riddle

  • Existing Behaviors:
    - Laptops are designed for individual use, but are often shared by multiple users at once. How do multiple people sitting around a table view an object designed to be seen from one direction?
    - Laptops are not adaptable to physical workspaces. Often times users must adapt their physical workspaces to accommodate their computers.
    - Sharing files from one computer to another can be a frustrating process, requiring external devices and other attachments.

  • Research Findings: User Feedback
"Even though we all brought computers, we can only work together on one at a time." - Tyler, Susan and Richard, Co-workers and Client
"I'm tired of having to get up every time she wants to show me something on her screen." - Fionna and Brad, Co-workers
"I share my screen on a daily basis - more than once. Always image related either, photos, movies, maps...." - Barbara, Museum Conservator

  • Inspiration

  • Collective Research: Personas, Interviews and Intial Concepts

  • Prototypes: Experimenting with Stacking, Magnifying, and Form Factors

  • Video prototyping revealed gestures and motions that were comfortable and intuitive.

  • Adjustable angle to address human factors

  • Intuitive Gestures:
    1. On/Off
    2. Transfer Files
    3. Zoom

  • Tablets are stored and recharged in a single case.
